The 7th October 2011 saw the University sign a memorandum of understanding with the Kaiela Institute to formalise their partnership and the commitment to engage productively with the Indigenous community in the Goulburn Valley.

The University established Murrup Barak - Melbourne Institute for Indigenous Development in 2009, to increase the impact of the University of Melbourne's Indigenous programs and to maximise its contribution to Indigenous development.
